Change Your Identity in a School
Hischool supports context-based identity.
This means your:
- Display name
- Profile image
Can be different in each school.
Your school identity is separate from your global profile.
How School Identity Works
Section titled “How School Identity Works”Each school may allow members to customize:
- Display name (nickname inside the school)
- Profile image (school-specific avatar)
If enabled by the school, this customized identity:
- Is visible only inside that school.
- Appears to other members in:
- Sidebar member lists
- Group conversations
- Mentions
- Member profiles (school context)
Outside the school, your global profile remains unchanged.
When Customization Is Allowed
Section titled “When Customization Is Allowed”Whether you can change your identity depends on school settings.
If the school owner or administrators enable this option in:
Roles & Permissions → Member Identity Settings
Then members can update their school-specific name and image.
If this option is disabled:
- Your global profile name and image will be displayed.
- You cannot override them inside that school.
How to Change Your School Identity
Section titled “How to Change Your School Identity”If the feature is enabled:
- Open the school.
- In the sidebar header, open the context menu.
- Select My Information.
- A modal window will appear.
- Update:

- Profile image

Your updated identity will apply immediately within that school.
Where Your School Identity Appears

- Member lists
- Group chats

- School-specific profile views
Other schools will not be affected.

From Profile Settings, you can:
- Update your global profile name and image.
- View all schools you are part of.
- Configure identity separately for each school (if allowed).
This gives you full control over:
- Your global identity
- Your school-specific identities
Why Context-Based Identity Exists

- Educational institutions
- Professional communities
- Personal interest groups
You may want to:
- Use your full legal name in a university.
- Use a nickname in a community.
- Use a branded identity in a professional school.
Hischool allows identity flexibility while maintaining governance.
If You Cannot Change Your Name or Image
Section titled “If You Cannot Change Your Name or Image”Possible reasons:
- The school has disabled member identity customization.
- Your role does not allow modification.
- The feature is restricted to certain roles.
- You are viewing your global profile instead of school context.
Contact the school administrator if unsure.
See:
→ Role & Permission Issues
Important Notes

- Changes are visible only within that school.
- Administrators may still see your underlying account identity.
