Leave a Group

If you no longer wish to participate in a group, you may be able to leave it.

⚠️ Group leaving rules depend on the group type.

Hischool supports two types of groups:

  • Public Groups
  • Private Groups

Leaving behavior is different for each.

Public groups:

  • Are visible to all school members
  • Automatically include all school members
  • Do not support individual leaving

Because membership is automatic, you cannot leave a Public group separately.

If you do not wish to see a Public group, you would need to:

  • Leave the school entirely, or
  • Adjust notification settings (if available)

Public groups are designed for school-wide communication.

Private groups are restricted.

Only explicitly added members (or role-authorized members) can access them.

Private groups support leaving — unless restricted by role.

If leaving is allowed:

  1. Open the private group.
  2. Access the group settings.
  3. Select Leave Group.
  4. Confirm your decision.

After confirmation:

  • The group disappears from your sidebar.
  • You lose access to messages and files.
  • You stop receiving notifications.
  • You are removed from the member list.

Leaving takes effect immediately.

After leaving a Private group:

  • You cannot see the group anymore.
  • You cannot access past conversations.
  • You cannot re-enter without new access.

To rejoin, you may need:

  • A new invite link
  • An invite code
  • A member with permission to add you again

Group membership is controlled.

You may not be able to leave if:

  • You are the group creator.
  • Your role restricts leaving.
  • The group is linked to a mandatory role.
  • School policy prevents leaving certain groups.

In some cases, administrators may need to remove you manually.

Depending on school configuration:

  • Your past messages may remain visible.
  • Your display name at the time of posting may remain.
  • Your access to message history is removed.

Message retention policies are managed at the school level.

Possible reasons:

  • The group is Public.
  • Your role does not allow leaving.
  • You are the group owner.
  • The school enforces mandatory participation.

Contact a school administrator if unsure.

Private group membership depends on school membership.

If you leave the school:

  • You are automatically removed from all groups.
  • You lose access to all group conversations.
  • You stop receiving all group notifications.

No. Leaving is immediate.

You must rejoin through normal access rules.

This depends on school configuration.

In most cases:

  • No automatic public announcement is made.
  • Administrators may see membership changes.

Yes.

If they have permission, they can:

  • Add you directly (Private group)
  • Share an invite link or code

  • Inform relevant members before leaving important groups.
  • Transfer responsibilities if needed.
  • Save important files or references.
  • Review pending tasks before exiting.

Leaving may affect collaboration workflows.
