Structure Categories

Categories help you organize groups inside your school.

Without categories:

  • Groups appear in a flat list.
  • The sidebar may become cluttered.
  • Navigation becomes difficult in large schools.

Using categories improves:

  • Clarity
  • Structure
  • Discoverability
  • Productivity

As your school grows:

  • The number of groups increases.
  • Sidebar navigation becomes crowded.
  • Members struggle to locate relevant groups.

Organizing groups into categories helps create a clear and structured environment.

To manage categories:

  1. Open your school.
  2. Go to School Settings.
  3. Navigate to Categories.

From this section, you can:

  • Create categories
  • Rename categories
  • Reorder categories
  • Delete categories
  • Reorder groups inside categories

To create a category:

  1. Open the Categories section.
  2. Select Add Category.
  3. Enter a category name.
  4. Save.

The category will then be available when assigning groups.

You can rename a category directly in the Categories management window.

Renaming a category:

  • Updates the sidebar immediately
  • Does not affect group members
  • Does not affect permissions

Categories can be reordered by:

  • Dragging them up or down
  • Adjusting their position in the list

The sidebar updates automatically after reordering.

Clear ordering improves usability and navigation.

You can change a group’s category in multiple ways.

  1. Open the group.
  2. Select Change Category.
  3. Choose a new category.
  4. Save.
  1. Open Group Settings.
  2. Modify the Category field.
  3. Save changes.

Changes take effect immediately.

Selecting a Category When Creating a Group

Section titled “Selecting a Category When Creating a Group”

When creating a new group:

  • You can select a category during setup.
  • The group will appear under that category in the sidebar.

See:
Create a group

Inside the Categories management section:

  • You can drag and reorder groups.
  • Groups will appear in the same order in the sidebar.
  • This helps improve navigation and organization.

When deleting a category:

  • The category is removed.
  • Groups inside the category are not deleted.
  • Those groups become uncategorized.
  • They appear in the sidebar without a category.

Deleting a category does not remove group content.

However, leaving too many uncategorized groups may reduce clarity.

  • Avoid leaving many groups uncategorized.
  • Group related subjects or teams together.
  • Use consistent naming conventions.
  • Avoid creating too many categories.
  • Review your structure periodically.

A well-designed category structure keeps the school organized as it grows.
