Notifications Not Working

If you are not receiving notifications for messages, mentions, or school activity, the issue is usually related to conversation settings, notification preferences, or device permissions.

Follow the steps below to identify the cause.

Step 1: Check If the Conversation Is Muted

Section titled “Step 1: Check If the Conversation Is Muted”

You may not receive notifications if the conversation is muted.

Check whether:

  • The conversation was muted manually
  • Notifications were disabled for that group
  • The conversation was archived

Open the conversation settings and confirm notifications are enabled.

See:
Conversation Settings

Step 2: Review Your Notification Preferences

Section titled “Step 2: Review Your Notification Preferences”

Your account notification settings control which alerts you receive.

Confirm that:

  • Message notifications are enabled
  • Mention notifications are enabled
  • Email notifications are enabled (if you use them)
  • School activity notifications are turned on

See:
Notification Preferences

Step 3: Check Device or Browser Permissions

Section titled “Step 3: Check Device or Browser Permissions”

Notifications may be blocked at the device or browser level.

Check the following:

  • Browser notification permissions
  • Mobile app notification settings
  • Operating system notification permissions
  • Do Not Disturb mode on your device

If notifications are blocked by your device, Hischool cannot deliver them.

If Do Not Disturb (DND) is enabled:

  • Alerts may be temporarily suppressed
  • Notifications may be delayed

Disable DND mode if you want to receive notifications immediately.

See:
Status and Presence

Step 5: Verify That Mentions Were Used Correctly

Section titled “Step 5: Verify That Mentions Were Used Correctly”

If you expected a mention notification:

  • Confirm your username was mentioned correctly
  • Ensure the mention format was correct (e.g., @username)
  • Make sure you are still a member of the conversation

Incorrect mentions may not trigger notifications.

See:
Mention Users

In some conversations:

  • Only administrators can send announcements
  • Notifications may be limited by group settings
  • Messaging permissions may be restricted

If unsure, contact the group administrator.

Step 7: Confirm You Are Still a Participant

Section titled “Step 7: Confirm You Are Still a Participant”

You will not receive notifications if:

  • You were removed from the group
  • You left the conversation
  • Your role changed and removed access

See:
Cannot See a Conversation

Possible causes:

  • Conversation muted
  • Device notifications disabled
  • DND mode enabled
  • Email notifications turned off

I Receive Email Notifications but Not Push Notifications

Section titled “I Receive Email Notifications but Not Push Notifications”

This may indicate:

  • Browser notifications disabled
  • Mobile push notifications disabled

This usually indicates:

  • Personal notification settings
  • Muted conversation
  • Device-level notification restrictions

Contact your administrator if:

  • Notifications are limited by school policy
  • Announcement mode is enabled
  • Messaging permissions are restricted

Contact support if:

  • Notifications fail across multiple conversations
