New Conversation

To start messaging in Hischool, you need to create a new conversation.

You can create:

  • A Direct Message (DM) with one friend
  • A Group Message with multiple friends

Messaging is only available between friends.
Users who are not friends — or who have blocked each other — cannot start a conversation.

To create a new conversation:

  1. Go to Messages.
  2. Click New Message.
  3. A modal window will appear.
  4. Your friend list will be displayed.
  5. Use the search field to find a friend by name.
  6. Select one or more friends.
  7. Click OK.

If you select one friend and click OK:

  • A Direct Message (DM) conversation will be created.
  • You will be redirected to the chat window.
  • You can start messaging immediately.

If a conversation with that friend already exists:

  • A new conversation will not be created.
  • You will be redirected to the existing chat.

This prevents duplicate DM threads.

Selecting Multiple Friends (Group Message)

Section titled “Selecting Multiple Friends (Group Message)”

If you select more than one friend:

  • A Group Message conversation will be created.
  • All selected friends become participants.
  • You can chat as a private group.

Group messages are separate from school groups.

You can also start a Direct Message from a user’s profile.

You may access a profile from:

  • Your Friends list
  • A School Members list
  • Other visible profile entry points

On the profile page:

  • Click Message (or the DM button).
  • A Direct Message will open immediately.

If a conversation already exists, it will open instead of creating a new one.

You can start a conversation only if:

  • The user is your friend
  • Neither user has blocked the other

You cannot start a conversation if:

  • You are not friends
  • Either user has blocked the other
  • Messaging is restricted by system rules

See: → Privacy Settings
