Add People to a Conversation
You can add participants directly in Group Messages and Private Groups.
Adding people allows you to immediately include additional members in a conversation or group activity.
Unlike invitations, adding people adds them instantly without requiring them to accept an invite.
Where You Can Add People
Section titled “Where You Can Add People”The Add People action is available in:
- Group Messages
- Private Groups inside a school
This action is not available in:
- Direct Messages (DM)
- Public Groups
Adding People in Group Messages
Section titled “Adding People in Group Messages”In Group Messages, when you select Add People:
- A list of your friends will appear.
- You can select one or more friends to add.
- Only users in your friend list can be added.
Once confirmed, the selected friends are added to the conversation immediately.
Adding People in Private Groups
Section titled “Adding People in Private Groups”In a Private Group inside a school, when you choose Add Members:
You can select users from:
- Your Friends
- School Members
This allows private groups to include members who are already part of the school community.
Adding Friends Who Are Not in the School
Section titled “Adding Friends Who Are Not in the School”If you add a friend who is not yet a member of the school:
- The system will first automatically add them as a school member.
- Then they will be added to the private group.
This helps simplify collaboration without requiring manual school invitations first.
Add vs Invite
Section titled “Add vs Invite”Hischool distinguishes between adding members and inviting users.
Add People
Section titled “Add People”- The user is added immediately.
- No acceptance is required.
- Used inside active conversations or private groups.
Invite
Section titled “Invite”- A user receives an invite link or invite code.
- They join by accepting the invitation.
- Often used to allow people to join later.

Permissions
Section titled “Permissions”Your ability to add people may depend on:
- Group permissions
- Conversation settings
- Your role within the group or conversation
Some groups may restrict member management to specific roles.
Best Practices
Section titled “Best Practices”- Add only users who are relevant to the discussion.
- Inform participants when new members are added.
- Avoid adding unnecessary users to private conversations.
- Review participant lists regularly in large groups.
Common Issues
Section titled “Common Issues”I cannot add someone
Section titled “I cannot add someone”Possible reasons:
- The group does not allow adding members.
- You do not have permission to add users.
- The conversation type does not support adding participants.
I cannot see a user in the list
Section titled “I cannot see a user in the list”Possible reasons:
- In Group Messages, only your friends are shown.
- In Private Groups, only friends and school members appear.
A friend was added to the school automatically
Section titled “A friend was added to the school automatically”This happens when you add a friend to a Private Group but they were not yet a member of the school.
The system automatically registers them as a school member before adding them to the group.
