Join a Group

To participate in discussions inside a school, you must have access to the group.

Group access depends on the group type and your role.

Hischool does not use a “Join” button for groups.

Hischool supports two types of groups:

Public groups:

  • Are visible to all school members
  • Do not require joining
  • Automatically include all school members
  • Open immediately when clicked

If a group is Public, you are already a member by default.

Public groups are typically used for:

  • Announcements
  • School-wide discussions
  • Shared resources

There is no separate membership management for Public groups.

Private groups are restricted.

They are visible and accessible only to:

  • The group creator
  • Members explicitly added to the group
  • School members with roles that grant access

Private groups do not have a “Join” button.

Instead, members join through controlled invitation methods.

There are three ways to join a Private group:

Authorized group members can generate an Invite Link.

The invite link:

  • Is created from the Private group settings
  • Is unique to that group
  • Can be shared with selected people

To join using an invite link:

  1. Click the shared invite link.
  2. Sign in to your Hischool account (if required).
  3. Review the group information in the popup window.
  4. Confirm to join.

If valid, you will immediately become a member of the group.

A Private group can also generate an Invite Code.

The invite code:

  • Is created from the Private group settings
  • Is unique
  • Can be shared manually

To join using an invite code:

  1. Click the + Create or Join button in the navigation bar.
  2. Select the join option.
  3. Enter the invite code.
  4. Confirm.

If the code is valid, you will join the Private group.

Authorized members of a Private group can directly add members.

They can:

  • Select from their friends
  • Select from school members

When adding someone:

  • If the person is already a school member, they are added directly to the Private group.
  • If the person is not yet a school member, they are automatically added to the school first, then added to the Private group.

This ensures group membership always exists within school membership.

  • Private group membership is controlled.
  • Only authorized roles can generate invite links or codes.
  • Only authorized roles can add members.
  • Public groups do not require joining.
  • Private groups do not display a Join button.

Once you join a Private group:

  • The group appears in your sidebar.
  • You can view and participate in conversations.
  • You receive notifications (depending on settings).

If you lose access, the group disappears from your view.

Your ability to:

  • Generate invite links
  • Generate invite codes
  • Add members
  • Remove members

Depends on your assigned role in the school.
